Summer is a perfect time for camping, people are going on their summer holidays and the festival season is in full flow. Time to pack your tent and enjoy the summer sun. When packing for a camping trip it can be difficult to know what you need without over packing. We have stripped back our camping essentials checklist to include some items that are more compact and easier to take to festivals. We have hand picked items we feel will make your camping trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

1. Tent
The number one essential and pretty obvious item is a tent. We recommend choosing a tent with a higher berth than the people staying in it i.e. for 4 people choose a 5 berth tent or higher. Always have a test run of putting up your tent before your trip, to get yourself familiar with the tent and to check you have enough tent pegs.

2. Sleeping Bag
A cosy sleeping bag is one of the key essentials when camping to make sure you get a good nights sleep ready for the next days adventures.

More for your money
One of the biggest benefits of having a caravan is the cost. The initial outlay may be costly, but trust us you will get value for your money. There are many different caravans available new and 2nd hand to suit any budget. A caravanning holiday cuts expensive flight and hotel costs out of the picture, most caravan sites are reasonably priced and have a variety of facilities for you to enjoy. Caravan sites costs per person are significantly less than hotels so if you are holidaying with the family the savings are remarkable. Joining the caravan club also gives you many benefits including discounts on certified sites to save you a little extra. Caravanning is great way to save on family holidays there are lots of free activities to enjoy with your children.

Not as basic as you think
You may think when you go caravanning you only have basic facilities. Most modern caravans are now fitted with many luxuries such as a radio, cooker, microwave, shower, heating, TV aerial, fridge and much more to help you feel at home. You can also buy extras for your caravan such as awnings and storage to give you a little more room to unwind. Most campsites have great facilities for you to enjoy too so caravanning is not slumming it by any means.

Home away from home
Caravans are like taking a miniature version of your home with you on your travels. You can decorate your caravan however you like and add home comforts to help you relax. Decorating your caravan in your style with personal touches will make you feel more settled on holiday. You can take items like your slippers and your children can take their favourite toys, things that you wouldn't usually pack when staying in a hotel.

Explore the world
Having a caravan gives you the freedom to travel from place to place fairly easily. There are a wide range of caravan sites in the UK whether you are looking to explore historical landmarks or experience new adventures there will be a campsite to welcome you. You may not know but you can go abroad with your caravan too. Hop on a ferry or the channel tunnel and Europe is yours to explore. There are many helpful websites that will give you information about sites abroad and all the documentation you will need. This is a great way to travel see the sites of Europe and see scenery you may not get to see when going on a plane.

Camping and caravanning can be a fun and cost affective holiday for the whole family. Camping is also a great way to explore different places. Family days out can get costly when going to theme parks, amusements and attractions it can soon add up. So we've decided to come up with a list of fun activities to do whilst camping that won't break the bank.

 

Exploring the outdoors

Camping is great for being at one with nature, going on a long walk to explore the local area is a great idea. Grab a map and choose a route with interesting view points and varied terrain. Going into the woods is an excellent way to explore nature there are plenty of fun things to do here are a few suggestions.

• Spotting local wildlife

• Nature gathering (rocks, flowers, pine cones, leaves)

• A scavenger hunt

• Collecting fire wood

• Geocaching

• Building a den from sticks

 Here are some fun activities to do if there is water nearby

• Go swimming (if it is safe and clean)

• Skimming stones

Another way to explore the area is going on a bike ride, before you go away have a look at the area to see if there are any recommended cycle tracks.

While the official start date is debatable, even the experts agree that the Easter Bank Holiday provides a great opportunity for a first camping getaway. The only thing standing between you and the perfect camping trip in April, however, is the weather. Looking at weather forecasts can help, but most hardcore campers agree that those forecasts are not always accurate.

 

James, a camping veteran from Hull, shared his secret for finding the right time to go camping: “It might sound a bit silly but my secret is to go on the Met Office website and check rain patterns in the area I'm planning to visit. I noticed that June tends to be the best month for camping in the South, whereas August seems ideal for camping near Newcastle. So far this trick has worked really well for us.”
